More tips on improving English

Do you know what happens to an Indian who is unable to speak any of the Indian languages other than his mother tongue? All he does is to be in an environment where Tamil, Telegu, Malayalam or even Marathi is spoken and in no time he is successful in picking up that language.

What happens when the language in question is English? Then even though he does understand the language when he is addressed in English he is unable to reply effectively. He finds that he is unable to frame a structured sentence which contains proper grammatical order.

Fear causes hesitation and hesitation causes his worst fears to come true. His lack of confidence, lack of complete knowledge of grammar combines with his fear of making mistakes and makes him falter more.

With every such miserable attempt he soon decides that English is not meant to be within his reach and one can speak English only if he has been given training of the language from a very early age.

Before we proceed further and discuss an effective remedy let us understand the similarities and differences between English and Indian languages.

We have learnt our mother tongue in a manner which will even stop experts from confusing us in it. This is so because we have understood the usage of our mother tongue not by grammar but by practice and use it by instinct and do not blindly apply it by logic.

The unfortunate element of learning English by grammar only has caused many more problems to the already existing ones in the minds of the learner.

They have a treasure trove of knowledge of grammar and grammatical order in their mother tongues, the same can prove a boon to them when they are taught to apply it in English. All they need is a method to caution them to use the same with a few changes in English, if they are taught to do this then they benefit vastly.

Let us check a few rules that will ensure that a beginner can polish his hold over English within a few moments.

“Think in English but check in your mother tongue” is the first norm to indulge in self correction while using English in the beginners level.

Forming a sentence with a proper subject (In Indian languages the object in many sentences usually becomes a good subject when framed in English).

Placing the verb between the subject and the object (As different from Indian languages that follow the S-O-V format instead).

Making short simple sentences instead of grappling and chocking with long ones. (For e.g., instead of framing a sentence like “Tomorrow Ravi, Rajesh and many many friends going college, exam writing, history exam.” Try - “ Ravi, Rajesh and friends are writing an exam. The exam is tomorrow in college. It is in History.”)

Think and frame aas many sentences as possible in simple formats like:

I am going.

I was going.

I will go.

I will be going

I went. And finally, be confidant while speaking in English. The key to aiding people to improve their grip over the English language is to first build their confidence and then orient them to a method that will ensure that they eliminate mistakes and make short, simple sentences in English without making mistakes. This will increase their will to learn better English and they will be on the path to progress without putting much effort.
